Broadway Veteran Culbreath to Stage a Revolution at the Joyce

By Adam Hetrick
17 Aug 2007

Lloyd Culbreath, a veteran Broadway dancer whose performing credits include Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life and Dancin', will direct the upcoming multimedia, dance and rock n' roll piece Revolution at the Joyce.

Co-created by Michael Schulster, a tap prodigy who previously toured in Fire of Dance, and Joel Hanna, a champion Irish step-dancer whose credits include Lord of the Dance and Fire of Dance, Revolution creates an evening of electrifying dance by combining tap, jazz, tango and martial arts with a live rock band. Schulster and Hanna's previous mounting of Revolution for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival earned raves.

The cast for the New York premiere of Revolution includes "So You Think You Can Dance" season two finalist Allison Holker as well as Mike Warshaw, Krista Montone, Ryan Kasprzak, Rachel Kreiling, James Sutherland, Lanie McAuley, Sonia De Los Santos, Viktor Bernardo, Mack Price, Tom Roslak and Jimmy Guasto.

Press notes for the production state, "Revolution comes at a time when dance has been increasingly popularized by television, yet the general public – not just studio audiences in Los Angeles – has yet to experience a live performance that feeds upon this popularity and inspires at the same time. It represents a conscious creative decision in the minds of Schulster and Hanna to bring new light to the music of their generation and generate new audiences for tap dance."

Revolution features music by Ryan Alfred and Chris Ryan, film direction by Jared Frank, additional choreography by Nicki Loud and lighting by Ryan O'Gara.

Director Culbreath also served as assistant choreographer for the revivals of Man of La Mancha and On the Town.

Revolution will run Sept. 25–Oct. 7 at The Joyce Theater, located at 175 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan. Tickets are available by calling (212) 242-0800 or online at www.joyce.org.
