Stephen Schwartz Songs Get Fresh Spin in Snapshots, at OH's Human Race Theatre

By Adam Hetrick
21 Aug 2007

Dayton, Ohio's Human Race Theatre Company will open its season Sept. 20 with the latest Stephen Schwartz musical, Snapshots, featuring old, new and revised songs by the Wicked co-creator.

Featuring a book by David Stern, Snapshots tells of Sue and Dan, married for 30 years. When Sue decides to leave her husband, she discovers a box of photographs chronicling their life together. The musical follows the pair as their younger selves emerge to reenact moments captured in the photos.

Snapshots isn't the typical composer revue show. Described as a play with music, Snapshots incorporates existing songs from the Schwartz catalog, including "Popular" from Wicked, "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin, "Meadowlark" from The Baker's Wife and "All Good Gifts" from Godspell. In addition, the production will feature "Making Good", a song cut from Wicked as well as new lyrics to "If We Never Meet Again" from Rags and new lyrics for "Endless Delights," cut since the original premiere of The Baker's Wife.

While audiences may be familiar with some of the songs in the production, all have been rearranged for the production, with Schwartz penning the title song "Snapshots."

Featured in the Human Race production will be Kristy Cates, Denise Devlin, Scott Hunt, Michael Craig Marcotte, Jay Montgomery and Stefanie Morse. Randy Brenner will direct.

The design team for Snapshots includes Brent Crayon (music director), Karl Christian (choreographer), Steve Orich (orchestrations), Bob Fetterman (scenic design), John Rensel (lighting design), Carolyn Ericson (costume design) and Gary Scanlon (sound design).

After developmental productions in Seattle and Daytona Beach, Snapshots arrives at the Human Race Theatre Company's Loft performing space on Sept. 20, continuing to Oct. 7. Snapshots is co-presented with the Victoria Theatre Association.
