Stage and Screen Star Theroux Directs Film Debut "Dedication" with Tony Winner Crudup

By Ernio Hernandez
24 Aug 2007

Stage and screen actor Justin Theroux makes his film directorial debut with "Dedication," starring recent Tony Award winner Billy Crudup, opening in New York City and Los Angeles Aug. 24.

The Plum Pictures production presented by The Weinstein Company and First Look International opens in limited release at select New York City and Los Angeles theatres before a nationwide expansion Sept. 14.

Crudup — the Tony winner of The Coast of Utopia — stars as Henry Roth, a New York children's book author who tells kids that Santa doesn't exist, and hates sleeping with anyone, including his girlfriend. His must lay on the floor, usually with heavy objects on top of him just to feel safe. His motto is, "Life is nothing but the occasional burst of laughter rising above the interminable wail of grief," according to a synopsis.

Billed as "a modern love story in which a misanthropic, emotionally complex author of a hit children's book series (Crudup) is forced to team with a beautiful illustrator (Mandy Moore) after his best friend and creative collaborator (Tom Wilkinson) passes away," the R-rated film also features stage veterans Bob Balaban (Romance, The Exonerated), Dianne Wiest (Salome, Third), Bobby Cannavale (Hurlyburly, upcoming Mauritius), Amy Sedaris (Wonder of the World) and Catherine Kellner (The Long Christmas Ride Home).

Also appearing in the ensemble are Christine Taylor, Peter Bogdanovich and Martin Freeman. The film was shot in New York City and on Long Island. The running time is 111 minutes.

Theroux, as an actor, has appeared on Broadway in the 1997 revival of The Three Sisters and Off-Broadway in Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, Shopping and Fucking and Hide Your Love Away: The Ballad of Brian Epstein. His film credits include "I Shot Andy Warhol," "American Psycho," "Mulholland Dr.," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle," and "The Baxter" as well as television appearances on "Six Feet Under," "Sex and the City," "The District" and "Alias."
