NY Theatre Barn Presents Songs From NYMF Shows — and Tunes by Cronin — Aug. 27

By Kenneth Jones
24 Aug 2007

New York Theatre Barn will offer a handful of songs from shows that will be seen in the 2007 New York Musical Theatre Festival, at the D-Lounge Aug. 27.

The Daryl Roth D-Lounge is at 101 E. 15th Street in Manhattan. The Lounge opens 7 PM Monday. There's a $10 cover and one drink minimum. The first performance is at 8 PM.

No reservation necessary for the casual gathering that will boast tunes from The Yellow Wood and Going Down Swingin' as well as songs by Bobby Cronin (That's Andy, B.R.A.T.S.).

This is not a NYMF event, but a preview of songs by writers who will be showcased in NYMF in September.

Going Down Swingin' has music by Peter Hilliard, lyrics by Matt Boresi. D-Lounge performances are by Jillian Louis, Arielle Doneson, Reed Prescott. In the show, "A boozing, womanizing crooner is haunted by the misdeeds of his past in this sexy and swingin' comedy, set at the end of radio's golden age. It's 1956, and caddish crooner Dean Newhouse's once-successful radio variety show is facing a dangerous new foe...Television. As Dean struggles to keep his show afloat, his bitter and double-crossed cast plots his come-uppance, in this innovative and hysterical reinvention of the controversial classic Don Giovanni!"

The Yellow Wood (to be directed at NYMF by B.D. Wong) won the 2006 Richard Rodgers Award and Daryl Roth Award. It has a book by Michelle Elliot, lyrics by Michelle Elliot and Danny Larsen and music by Danny Larsen. D-Lounge Performances are by Jason Tam, Randy Blair, Caissie Levy and Maryann Hu.

"The Yellow Wood," according to notes, "is a musical kaleidoscope where not-so-normal 17-year old Adam takes a fantastic, unpredictable journey as he struggles to accept all the parts of himself: his ADD, his Korean heritage and his complex relationships with friends and family. The Yellow Wood explores the angst, joy and highly imaginative state of one teen's amazing brain."

Between sets Mandi Gosling will perform "her brand new cabaret." Music direction is by Steve Smith. Bobby Cronin directs.

At 9:30 PM, The Music of Bobby Cronin will be heard, sung by Brad Bass, Caissie Levy, Kate Pazakis, Ryan Weiss, Robyn Elizabeth Lee and Johanna Pinzler.
