Kevin Kline Stars in Jose Rivera's "Trade" Film

Stage and screen star Kevin Kline will star in playwright Jose Rivera's sophomore film effort, the forthcoming "Trade," which is slated to hit theatres this fall.

Following runs in the film festival circuit, the movie will have a limited release in New York and Los Angeles Sept. 28.

Rivera's "Trade" was inspired by "The Girls Next Door," Peter Landesman's NY Times Magazine story on the U.S. sex trade. The film, according to press notes, is described as a "thrilling story of courage and a devastating expose of one of the world's most heinous crimes." Rivera earned an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay to "The Motorcycle Diaries."

German director Marco Kreuzpaintner makes his American debut with the film produced by Roland Emmerich and Rosilyn Heller.

"When 13-year-old Adriana (Paulina Gaitan) is kidnapped by sex traffickers in Mexico City, her 17-year-old brother, Jorge (Cesar Ramos), sets off on a desperate mission to save her," reads a show synopsis. "Trapped by an underground network of international thugs who earn millions exploiting their human cargo, Adriana's only friend throughout her ordeal is Veronica (Alicja Bachleda), a young Polish woman captured by the same criminal gang. As Jorge dodges overwhelming obstacles to track the girl's abductors, he meets Ray (Kevin Kline), a Texas cop whose own family loss leads him to become an ally."

The film also features stage veterans Anthony Crivello (Tony Award winner for Kiss of the Spider Woman) and Linda Emond (Life x 3, Homebody/Kabul).

Versatile performer Kline is known for his work on stage and screen. He recently starred in the title role of Off-Broadway's King Lear and appeared in HBO's "As You Like It" for director Kenneth Branagh. The busy actor will next appear as the title charactrer in a Broadway revival of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac. Other credits include Mother Courage and Her Children and The Seagull for The Public Theater as well as a Tony Award-nominated stint in Broadway's Henry IV. His film roles have included "Sophie's Choice," "Dave," "In & Out," "Soapdish," "De-Lovely," "The Big Chill," "The Ice Storm," "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and an Academy Award-winning turn in "A Fish Called Wanda."

The Puerto-Rican born Rivera is known for his Obie Award-winning plays Marisol and References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot. Other works include Cloud Tectonics, Each Day Dies with Sleep, Sonnets for an Old Century, Sueno, Giants Have Us in Their Books, Marciela de la Luz Lights the World, Adoration of the Old Woman, Massacre (Sing to Your Children) and School of the Americas. He is currently at work on penning "The Untranslatable Secrets of Orlando Corona" as well as a screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" and will make his feature film directing debut with "Celestina" — based on his play Cloud Tectonics.
