Rapp Wrestles with American Sligo as World Premiere Begins Off-Broadway Sept. 12

By Ernio Hernandez
12 Sep 2007

The world premiere of Adam Rapp's American Sligo, which kicks off Rattlestick Playwrights Theater's new season, begins previews Sept. 12.

Rapp (Red Light Winter) directs his own work, which is slated to open Sept. 24 for a limited engagement through Oct. 14.

Marylouise Burke (Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo) and Megan Mostyn-Brown (The Secret Lives of Losers playwright) are featured in the cast of American Sligo with Rapp vets Guy Boyd (Stone Cold Dead Serious), Michael Chernus (Essential Self-Defense), Emily Cass McDonnell (Christopher Denham's Cagelove), Paul Sparks (Essential Self-Defense) and Matthew Stadelmann (Stone Cold Dead Serious).

In American Sligo, "Art 'Crazy Train' Sligo (Slee-go), all-star wrestling legend, is about to retire," according to show notes. "His two sons, his sister-in-law, his greatest fan and a few unexpected guests gather on the eve of his final match for his last supper, but things just can't seem to stop going wrong in the Sligo home."

The design team features John McDermott (sets), Ben Stanton (lights), Daphne Javitch (costumes) and Eric Shim (sound). Dominic D'Andrea serves as assistant director with Jess Johnston as production stage manager.

Rapp made his Off-Broadway directorial debut with his own Red Light Winter (a 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist) and also staged Christopher Denham's cagelove at Rattlestick. As a playwright, he has penned the plays Nocturne, Stone Cold Dead Serious, Finer Noble Gases, Blackbird, Essential Self-Defense, Gompers, Trueblinka and Faster.

The new season at Rattlestick continues with Noah Haidle's Rag and Bone (Nov. 13-Dec. 16), Lars Norén's War (Jan. 29-March 2, 2008) and David Grimm's Steve and Idi (April-May 2008).

Tickets for American Sligo at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, 224 Waverly Place (off Seventh Ave.), are available by calling (212) 868-4444. For more information visit rattlestick.org.
