Broadway "Mama" Saviola Stars in Golda's Balcony at TheatreWorks

By Ernio Hernandez
12 Sep 2007

Camille Saviola — a star of the original Broadway Nine — will take on the title role in the upcoming TheatreWorks production of William Gibson's Golda's Balcony.

Aaron Davidman directs the staging to begin Oct. 3 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts in Palo Alto, CA. The show will open Oct. 6 for a run through Oct. 28.

The solo work focuses on the life of Golda Meir and her rise to her post as Prime Minister of Israel. Golda's Balcony is "set during the events leading up to the Yom Kippur war of 1973, one of Meir's most troubling times as Prime Minister of Israel," as show notes explain. The drama "interweaves Meir's life in world politics with recollections of her family as she balances the weight of her people's dreams."

Following a world premiere at Massachusetts' Shakespeare & Company in 2002, the work made its New York premiere Off-Broadway at Manhattan Ensemble Theater in 2003. The Scott Schwartz-directed staging transferred to Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre later that year earning its star Tovah Feldshuh a Tony Award nomination.

Saviola appeared on Broadway in the original staging of the musical Nine as Mama Maddelena. She has also played another Broadway musical Mama (Morton) in the revival of Chicago. Her films credits include "Last Exit Brooklyn," "Broadway Danny Rose" and "Purple Rose of Cairo." The veteran actress has also performed on television's "Entourage," "ER," "Judging Amy," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Friends."

Davidman is the artistic director of Traveling Jewish Theatre — where he has staged The Golden Bird, The Chosen, Death of a Salesman and Blood Relative. As an actor, he appeared in Isaac, God's Donkey: A Play on Moses, and a revival of Berlin, Jerusalem and the Moon.

Tickets for Golda's Balcony at TheatreWorks at the Mountain View Center, 500 Castro Street (at Mercy), are available through (650) 903-6000 and online at theatreworks.org.
