Lauria Directs Reading of Machiavelli in L.A. Sept. 24

By Ernio Hernandez
13 Sep 2007

Dan Lauria will direct a Los Angeles reading of Richard Vetere's Machiavelli, featuring Ray Abruzzo, Richard Portnow, Paul Ben Victor, Robert Cicchini and Stacy Cole.

The staged reading — which is part of Bruno Kirby Celebrity Reading Series — plays Sept. 24 at 8 PM at The Hayworth Theatre.

Set in Florence in the early 1500s, Machiavelli centers on a military police major and his wife who "must use their wits to navigate the outrageous whims and violent behavior the Medici family... as well as  their own daughter's shocking rebellion," according to production notes.

Lauria, remembered for his turn as the patriarch on the TV show "The Wonder Years," recently staged and starred with Jack Klugman in Jeffrey Sweet's The Value of Names The Falcon Theatre. As an actor, his theatrical credits in The Stone Carver, Hearts, The Price, Men with Suits, The Guys, Ears on a Beatle and Leading Ladies. He also serves as artistic director of Los Angeles' The Playwright's Kitchen Ensemble.

Vetere is the playwright of One Shot, One Kill and has also penned the novel "The Third Miracle" and co-authored the screenplay adaptation.

The Bruno Kirby Reading Series premiered in June with Lou Diamond Phillips' Burning Desire, starring Phillips, Amy Smart and Michael Urie. Chandra Wilson and Paul Mazursky then continued the read Josh Greenfeld's Canal Street in August. The series is named for the beloved late actor and showcases "celebrities who are dedicated to theatre." Kirby was known for his work in Lost In Yonkers, "This is Spinal Tap," "Good Morning Vietnam," "When Harry Met Sally," "The Godfather II" and "The Freshman."

Tickets (at $15 each) for Machiavelli at The Hayworth Theatre, 2509 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA, are available by calling (213) 389-9860. For more information visit TheHayworth.com.
