Sweeney Todd's Young Lovers to Perform at San Francisco's Plush Room

By Ernio Hernandez
18 Sep 2007

Lauren Molina and Benjamin Magnuson — who currently co-star in the American Conservatory Theater run of Sweeney Todd — will offer a one-night-only performance at San Francisco's Plush Room Oct. 1.

The cabaret event, scheduled on one of Sweeney's dark nights, will also feature other cast members from that Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical.

Molina and Magnuson — who also starred as, respectively, Johanna and Anthony in the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd — will team on "an eclectic blend of original songs and seldom-heard cover tunes," according to an announcement.

"Ben's musical style is rock driven, with a seductive energy, while mine maintains a playful light and quirky quality. We complement each other well," said Molina in a statement. Magnuson said the set list will include "tunes by Tom Waits, Damien Rice, Jamie Cullum, and Martin Sexton." Molina will also perform original songs from her new album, "Doo-Be-Doo."

The duo previously teamed on their first cabaret appearance at Urban Stages in New York City and have played engagements at the Bowery Ballroom. "We are both very excited about making our San Francisco cabaret debut at the Plush Room," said Magnuson, "and look forward to taking this show on the road with us."

Tickets ($25) for the cabaret event are available through A.C.T. Ticket Services, 405 Geary Street, by calling (415) 749-2228 or at act-sf.org.

The Sweeney Todd cast, directed by John Doyle, also stars Judy Kaye (Mrs. Lovett), David Hess (Sweeney Todd), Diana DiMarzio, John Arbo, Keith Buterbaugh, Benjamin Eakeley, Edmund Bagnell and Katrina Yaukey. The show ends its San Francisco run Oct. 14; the national tour will officially launch at Boston's Colonial Theatre Oct. 23.
