Rock 'n' Roll Playwright Stoppard Asks "Can Art Change the World?" at Times Talk

By Ernio Hernandez
22 Sep 2007

Playwright Tom Stoppard — whose Rock 'n' Roll will arrive on Broadway in October — will take part in a Times Talks event Oct. 26.

Moderated by New York Times special projects editor John Darnton, the discussion will take place Oct. 26 at 6 PM at TimesCenter Stage.

"Can Art Change the World?," the title of the talk, is also the central question behind the playwright's recent West End hit that is headed for Broadway. The esteemed Tony Award-winning British playwright and Academy Award-winning screenwriter will discuss his work and the ideas behind his new play.

Stoppard was represented on Broadway last season by the Tony Award-winning epic three-part cycle The Coast of Utopia. His win marked the fourth of his works to be Tony honored — following Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Travesties and The Real Thing. Other plays include Jumpers, The Invention of Love, Arcadia, The Fifteen Minute Hamlet and Hapgood. He has also penned the screenplays for "Brazil," "Empire of the Sun," "Billy Bathgate" and "Shakespeare in Love."

Upcoming Times Talks also include "Born Standing Up: A Conversation with Steve Martin" that is slated for Nov. 20. The actor-comedian and sometimes-playwright (W.A.S.P., Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Underpants) has already sold out his interview event with New York Times Magazine contributing writer Deborah Solomon.

Tickets ($25) to the Stoppard event at TheTimesCenter, 242 West 41st Street, are available through ticketweb.com.
