Additional Cast Ready to Rock 'n' Roll for Stoppard U.S. Premiere

By Adam Hetrick
02 Oct 2007

Stephen Kunken has joined the cast of Rock 'n' Roll.

Additional casting has been announced for the U.S. premiere of Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll, which is scheduled to begin performances at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre Oct. 19.

The previously announced Brian Cox (Max), Sinead Cusack (Eleanor/Esme (Older), Rufus Sewell (Jan), Nicole Ansari (Lenka) and Alice Eve (Esme (Younger)/Alice) will be joined by Brian Avers (Stephen), Mary Bacon (Gillian/Magda/Deirdre), Seth Fisher (The Piper/Policeman), Stephen Kunken (Ferdinand), Quentin Mare’ (Nigel/Interrogator), Ken Marks (Milan/Waiter) and Alexandra Neil (Candida).

Imported from the original London production are Nicole Ansari, Sinead Cusack, Brian Cox, Alice Eve and Rufus Sewell; the latter won the Olivier, Evening Standard and London Critics' Circle awards for his performance.

"It's August 1968, and Russian tanks are rolling in to Prague," press notes state. "Jan, the Czech student, lives for rock music, Max, the English professor, lives for Communism and Esme, the flower child, is high. By 1990, the tanks are rolling out, the Stones are rolling in and idealism has hit the wall. A deeply felt look at the connection between rock music and revolution, Stoppard's sweeping and witty play spans two countries, three generations and twenty-two turbulent years, at the end of which love remains - and so does rock 'n' roll."

Stoppard's work received its world premiere at London's Royal Court, subsequently transferring to a sold-out run in the West End, earning the London Evening Standard and London Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for Best New Play.

Directed by Trevor Nunn, Rock 'n' Roll features set design by Robert Jones, costume design by Emma Ryott, lighting design by Howard Harrison and sound design by Ian Dickinson.

Rock 'n' Roll officially opens on Broadway Nov. 4. Tickets are currently available by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com.

Rock 'n' Roll will be produced on Broadway by Sonia Friedman Productions, Bob Boyett, Ostar Enterprises, Roger Berlind and Tulbart Productions, in association with Lincoln Center Theater.
