A.R. Gurney's What I Did Last Summer Will Return to the NY Stage in November

By Adam Hetrick
05 Oct 2007

A.R. Gurney's coming-of-age story, What I Did Last Summer, will make a return to the New York stage Nov. 7.

Retro Productions, in residence at the Spoon Theatre, will remount Gurney's work, which "looks at life on the home front during the waning days of World War II," according to press notes. "In the summer of 1945, while his father is stationed in the Pacific, 14 year-old Charlie and his family head to their summer home in an effort to keep some normalcy in their lives. While there, he rebels against his mother and finds himself under the tutelage of 'the Pig Woman,' the town misfit, who tries to help him find his potential while pointing out the foibles of upper middle class society, of which they are all products. However society does not give up one of its own without a fight - as more than one person finds out."

The Retro Productions mounting marks What I Did Last Summer's first New York City production since its debut in 1983.

The cast will include Lauren Coppola, Heather E. Cunningham, Lauren Kelston, Tim Romero, Ben Schnickel and Aubrie N. Therrien, under the direction of Ric Sechrest.

A.R. Gurney is the author of the popular works Love Letters, The Dining Room, Sylvia, The Cocktail Hour, Indian Blood and Crazy Mary. His works have earned him the Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk and Rockefeller Awards.

What I Did Last Summer will run through Nov. 24 at the Spoon Theater, located at 38 West 38th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are available by calling (866) 811-4111 or by visiting www.retroproductions.org.
