Broadway's Esparza to Appear on ABC's "Pushing Daisies"

Broadway star Raúl Esparza — of the recent Company revival and the forthcoming The Homecoming — is slated to appear in the new ABC series "Pushing Daisies."

Esparza will play the recurring role of Alfredo Aldarisio, "a salesman who specializes in homeopathic remedies for depression," an ABC spokesperson told Playbill.com. The actor will first appear on the Oct. 17 episode and again in November.

Bryan Fuller ("Heroes," "Wonderfalls") and Barry Sonnenfeld ("Men in Black") created the new hour-long series, which plays Wednesdays at 8 PM (ET). (Check local listings.) Tony Award winners Kristin Chenoweth and Swoosie Kurtz as well as fellow stage actors Lee Pace, Anna Friel and Ellen Greene appear in the series.

In the episode titled "The Fun in Funeral," Aldarisio offers Chuck (Friel) free samples, which she bakes into pies for her aunts, in the hopes of bringing a little sunshine into their lives.

Esparza has appeared on Broadway in Company, Taboo, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Cabaret and The Rocky Horror Show — earning Tony nominations for his work in the first two. He has also appeared onstage in tick, tick . . . BOOM!, The Normal Heart, Sunday in the Park with George and Merrily We Roll Along.

Billed as a "blend of romance, fantasy and mystery," "Pushing Daisies" follows a "forensic fairytale about Ned, a young man with a very special gift," according to a show description. "As a young boy Ned discovers that he can return the dead briefly back to life with just one touch. But his random gift isn't without deadly consequences… as he soon finds out."

Pace (Small Tragedy, The Guardians) stars as Ned opposite Friel (original star of Closer) and Chi McBride ("Boston Public," "The Nine"). Chenoweth (Wicked, The Apple Tree) plays a featured role along with fellow stage leading ladies Greene (Little Shop of Horrors, Side Man) and Kurtz (Frozen, Fifth of July). Jim Dale (The Threepenny Opera) provides the show's narration.
