Latinologues' Rick Najera Pens Sweet 15 (Quinceañera) for San Diego Rep

By Adam Hetrick
11 Oct 2007

The San Diego Repertory Theatre will present the world premiere musical Sweet 15 (Quinceañera) by Latinologues author and performer Rick Najera.

Najera's work, according to press notes, "welcomes [audiences] into the home of the Valderama family, as they prepare to celebrate their daughter's 15th birthday – ten years too late! Set in National City, their story begins when the patriarch of the family, Eduardo, returns home from Mexico after a ten-year absence that began when his daughter Sonora turned 15. He promises to re-unite his estranged family under one condition – that they allow him throw a Quinceañara for his daughter, who is now 25 years old."

San Diego Rep artistic director Sam Woodhouse will direct the interactive comedy, which stars Najera as well as Nina Brissey, Alma Martinez, Carlos D'Amore, Fernando Vega and Yvonne DeLaRosa.

Rick Najera is an award-winning writer for his work on "MAD TV" and "In Living Color." For San Diego Rep, Najera was commissioned to write A Quiet Love, Latins Anonymous and Latinologues. He is currently the vice president of development for LATV, a new bilingual television network.

Sweet 15 (Quinceañera) is sponsored by "Enlace," San Diego's Weekly Latino Newspaper, and the San Diego Latino Film Festival.

Sweet 15 (Quinceañera) begins performances Nov. 17 with an official opening night scheduled for Nov. 28. The limited run continues through Dec. 16 at San Diego Rep's Lyceum Theatre, located at 79 Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. Tickets are available by calling (619) 544-1000 or by visiting www.sandiegorep.com.
