George Psomas Named 2007 Broadway Idol Winner

By Adam Hetrick
11 Oct 2007

After three weeks of competitions, the NYMF-sponsored Broadway Idol competition has named George Psomas the 2007 Broadway Idol.

Psomas won over crowds during the final competition, "Star to Be," in which the final three contestants sang songs from the pre-Oklahoma! Broadway and the post-Hair Broadway catalogue. Psomas' winning selections included "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from Roberta, and Company's "Being Alive." He will receive his own solo concert produced and presented at Ars Nova, to be announced at a later date.

The competitions were hosted by Annie's Andrea McArdle, with Broadway guest judges including Marc Shaiman, Donna Lynne Champlin, Anthony Rapp, Jose Llana, Mandy Gonzales, Lonny Price, Manoel Felciano and Stephanie D'Abruzzo.

Audience members narrowed down the contestants by text-message voting, ultimately naming Psomas the winner. The Broadway Idol finalists were Isabel Santiago and Auri Marcus.

A Muhlenberg College graduate, Psomas' regional credits include Godspell, Once Upon A Time in New Jersey, Made in America: Irving Berlin and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
