Bolivian Troupe's En Un Sol Amarillo to Rise in Los Angeles

By Ernio Hernandez
16 Oct 2007

Members of Bolivia's Teatro de los Andes will perform in the upcoming production of En Un Sol Amarillo – Memorias De Un Temblor at Los Angeles' Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Written and directed by César Brie, En Un Sol Amarillo will begin previews at the Culver City venue Oct. 26 with an official opening Oct. 28. Center Theatre Group and FITLA (the International Latino Theatre Festival of Los Angeles) present the run, which is slated to continue through Nov. 25.

Lucas Achirico, Daniel Aguirre, Gonzalo Callejas and Alice Guimaraes will be featured in the cast.

Billed as "an avant-garde docudrama about the massive earthquake that rocked Bolivia in 1998," En Un Sol Amarillo – Memorias De Un Temblor — which translates to In a Yellow Sun – Memories of an Earthquake will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

"With electrifying imagery, the piece sheds light on the victims and the survivors of the seismic disturbance, and also on damaging shockwaves of greed and corruption that followed," according to show materials.

The design team includes Gonzalo Callejas (set), Soledad Ardays and Danuta Zarzyka (costumes) with Giampaolo Nalli and Danuta Zarzyka (lighting and sound). Music coordination is by Lucas Achirico and Pablo Brie.

Teatro de los Andes was founded in 1991 by César Brie and is located near Sucre, Bolivia. The company, according to a press release, "brings theatre to local communities, universities and job sites. With its distinctive fusion of western theatrical technique and the Andean tradition, the ensemble is rooted in improvisation, physical and vocal work and the belief in the actor as "actor-poet."

The season at the Kirk Douglas Theatre will continue with Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Jan. 13-Feb. 17, 2008), No Child... (March 6-April 13, 2008), A Waitress in Yellowstone (May 11-June 8, 2008) and Of Equal Measure (June 29-July 27, 2008).

Tickets to En Un Sol Amarillo at The Kirk Douglas Theatre, 9820 Washington Blvd. in Culver City, CA, can be purchased by calling CTG Audience Services at (213) 628-2772 or online at CenterTheatreGroup.org.
