"Farm Girl in New York," by Broadway's Spencer and Schecter, Will Play Big Apple Film Fest

By Ernio Hernandez
20 Oct 2007

"Farm Girl in New York," a new film by J. Robert Spencer — one of Broadway's Jersey Boys — has been selected to premiere at the Big Apple Film Festival in November.

The fourth annual event will take place at New York City's Tribeca Cinemas, Nov. 14-17. Spencer penned the independent feature with fellow Broadway star, Jeffrey Howard Schecter (A Chorus Line).

"Sam and Matt flee their small mid-western town of 'Shickville,' for New York City, where hot girls roam the streets!," reads a show synopsis. "After months of failure they come up with the idea to hold a fake audition to meet women. Hilarity ensues when dozens of hot, talentless, babes show up competing for a job that doesn't exist."

The comedy soon puts the unlikely heroes in the midst of writing and rehearsing a show — simply to win the heart of one of the actresses. Set in and around the Broadway community, the film was shot in New York City.

"My friend Jeff Schecter, he and I — and another guy named Josh Wade — we wrote this together," Spencer previously told Playbill.com. "I'm producing it and directing it and they're starring in it. We've been shooting in the day and then doing our Broadway shows at night."

The cast also features Allison Munn, Chryssie Whitehead and J. Elaine Marcos.

Spencer — who spent some time writing in Los Angeles prior to landing his current gig in Jersey Boys — had previously worked on short films and sketch comedy. He appeared in the 2006 Tony Award-winning Best Musical as late Four Seasons member Nick Massi. His Broadway debut was in Side Show — where he appeared opposite his wife Jenny-Lynn Suckling.

Schecter currently appears in the Broadway revival of A Chorus Line as Mike. He has previously enjoyed roles in The Pajama Game, Wonderful Town and Beauty and the Beast.
