Broadway Will Dim Its Lights Oct. 31 to Honor the Late Goulet

By Andrew Gans
31 Oct 2007

Robert Goulet

Broadway will dim its lights Oct. 31 at 8 PM to honor the memory of Robert Goulet, the actor who created the role of Sir Lancelot in the original Broadway production of Camelot. Goulet, who had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, died Oct. 30. He was 73.

Broadway marquees as well as those in cities across North America will be dimmed at 8 PM for one minute.

Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the League of American Theatres and Producers, said in a statement, "We will dearly miss this enchanting and charismatic entertainer who has charmed audiences throughout the world. He is a national treasure who gave his life to his first love, theatre."

In addition to this Tony-winning Broadway work, Goulet was also a major player in touring productions.

Pat Halloran, President of the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, TN, stated, "When Robert was in a show and touring the country, we knew that the production would be a success. As Yul Brynner is synonymous with The King and I, Robert Goulet is the legend of Camelot. People loved and admired his commanding stage presence and powerful and beautiful voice. Touring Broadway presenters across the country can only hope for another star as committed to making theatrical magic possible for everyone."
