New Musical Vanities Will Arrive on Broadway in Fall 2008

Judith Ivey

Vanities, a new musical based on the 1976 Off-Broadway comedy that ran nearly 2,000 performances, is scheduled to arrive on Broadway in fall 2008 under the direction of two-time Tony Award winner Judith Ivey.

Junkyard Dog Productions and Bartner/Jenkins will produce the Broadway run at a theatre to be announced. Casting will be revealed at a later date.

Vanities features a score by David Kirshenbaum and a book by Jack Heifner. The musical, according to press notes, "chronicles the comic journey of three bubbly Texas teens from cheerleaders to sorority sisters to housewives, liberated women and beyond. This coming-of-age tale set in the '60s and '70s is a musical scrapbook of an era that had to be lived to be believed. Vanities offers a snapshot-sharp portrait of the lives, loves, disappointments, and dreams of best friends caught up in rapidly changing times."

Vanities was produced in summer 2006 at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA, and was later showcased at the 2006 National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) Festival of New Musicals. A private industry presentation was held in Manhattan Sept. 27 that featured Sarah Stiles (who performed the role of Joanne in the California world premiere), Kate Wetherhead as Kathy and Mary Faber as Mary.

Kirshenbaum penned music and lyrics to Off-Broadway's Summer of '42, which is licensed by Dramatists Play Service. The cast album is on Jay Records. Williamstown Theatre Festival produced his musical, Party Come Here, this past summer.

Heifner's plays also include Earth to Bucky, Patio/Porch, Natural Disasters, Running On Empty, Bargains, Jumping for Joy, Boy's Play, Home Fires, Heartbreak, Comfort and Joy, The Lemon Cookie, Dwarf Tossing and Key West.

Ivey is a two-time Tony Award winner for her roles in Steaming and Hurlyburly. She also received a nomination for her performance in Park Your Car in Harvard Yard, and her other Broadway credits include the revival of Follies as well as Voices in the Dark, Blithe Spirit, Precious Sons, Piaf and Bedroom Farce. Among her directorial credits are productions of The Butcher of Baraboo, Southern Comforts, Bad Dates, Steel Magnolias and Two for the Seesaw.
