Vineyard Theatre to Bring Back God's Ear for Off-Broadway Run

By Ernio Hernandez
16 Nov 2007

The Vineyard Theatre has announced Jenny Schwartz's God's Ear will complete the company's Off-Broadway season; performances begin in April 2008. Dates for the Vineyard's mounting of the new musical, The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island, have also been set.

Anne Kauffman (The Thugs) will stage Schwartz's God's Ear, which debuted earlier this year at New Georges under the auspices of the Vineyard. Previews will begin in April 2008 on the company's mainstage.

Vineyard teams with New Georges for the new run of the drama that centers on a young couple who struggle with life after losing their son — their only guides are their daughter Lanie, the Tooth Fairy and G.I. Joe.

The show earned critical acclaim for its May 2007 debut at the East 13th Street Theatre in a production featuring the music of Michael Friedman (Gone Missing).

"I believe Jenny Schwartz to be a major new writer for the theatre," said artistic director Doug Aibel. "The Vineyard was honored to first develop God's Ear through a series of readings and workshops over several years... We are pleased to be able to give God's Ear another opportunity to be experienced by more theatregoers."

The troupe currenty presents Julia Cho's new play The Piano Teacher, starring Tony Award winner Elizabeth Franz (opening Nov. 18). Next up will be The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (or the Friends of Dr. Rushower). Bob McGrath (Jennie Richee) will direct the production, which begins previews January 25, 2008, with an opening slated for early February.

Other projects in the works — workshops or readings — include Adam Rapp's The Metal Children, Tarell Alvin McCraney's Wig Out!, the new Mariana Elder-Chris Miller-Nathan Tysen musical The Burnt Part Boys and a currently untitled work by playwright-composer Polly Pen.

For tickets to shows at the Vineyard Theatre, 108 East 15th Street, call (212) 353-0303 or visit vineyardtheatre.org.
