Gutenberg! The Musical! Makes Regional Premiere Nov. 16 in Utah

By Kenneth Jones
16 Nov 2007

Plan-B Theatre Company in Salt Lake City is the first theatre company to snag a license to produce Gutenberg! The Musical! by Scott Brown and Anthony King, following the original London and New York productions.

The spoof of passionate musical theatre writers — spotlighting two desperate and bravely untalented songwriters who are performing a backers' audition for their new musical about the inventor of the printing press — begins Nov. 16 for a run to Dec. 30 in the Equity troupe's 77-seat home.

Plan-B artistic director Jerry Rapier stages the musical, a rare non-political piece for the edgy company known for works about social justice. He told Playbill.com that the wacky musical comedy was an attempt to offer audiences something other than cheery holiday fare, and something perhaps less astringent than past serious Plan-B fare.

Writers King and Brown are planning to visit the Salt Lake production in mid-December, Rapier reported. The show is expected to have a wide life in regional theatres.

The cast of two features Kirt Bateman (as Doug) and Jay Perry (as Bud). Musical staging is by Colleen Lewis. Musical direction is by Jeffrey Price.

Performances will play the Studio Theatre at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. Broadway (300 South), in Salt Lake City.
