LoveMusik Cast Album in Stores Nov. 27

By Kenneth Jones
27 Nov 2007

The Broadway cast recording of LoveMusik, the musical biography of the relationship between composer Kurt Weill and actress Lotte Lenya, is in stores Nov. 27 from Ghostlight Records.

The musical, which played a limited engagement produced by Manhattan Theatre Club at the Biltmore Theatre in spring 2007, used songs from Weill's career to tell the tale of the unconventional romance. Michael Cerveris starred as Weill, and Donna Murphy was Lenya. The show was nominated for four Tony Awards.

The recording was produced by Joel Moss with Kurt Deutsch serving as executive producer.

Suggested by the letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, LoveMusik featured a book by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy, Parade) and direction by legendary Tony Award winner Harold Prince (The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret and Sweeney Todd).

Songs in the score include "Speak Low," "September Song" and "Surabaya Johnny" and rarely recorded songs such as "Wouldn't You Like To Be On Broadway?," "Buddy on the Night Shift," "Girl of the Moment" and "A Bird of Passage."

The musical was set in Berlin, Paris, Broadway and Hollywood, spanning 25 years in the lives of the complicated couple.

Cerveris and Murphy both received Tony Award nominations for their performances in LoveMusik. LoveMusik was honored with 12 Drama Desk nominations, receiving two awards (for Donna Murphy's performance and Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations); and five Outer Critics Circle nominations, receiving two awards (for Donna Murphy and David Pittu's performances).

The cast also features Tony Award nominee David Pittu (as Bertolt Brecht) and John Scherer (as George Davis), with Judith Blazer, Edwin Cahill, Herndon Lackey, Erik Liberman, Ann Morrison, Graham Rowat, Rachel Ulanet and Jessica Wright.

The show features the lyrics of Maxwell Anderson, Bertolt Brecht, Howard Dietz, Roger Fernay, Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Langston Hughes, Alan Jay Lerner, Maurice Magre, Ogden Nash, Elmer Rice and Kurt Weill. Orchestrations are by Jonathan Tunick, musical supervisor is Kristen Blodgette, music coordinator is Seymour Red Press, additional vocal arrangements are by Milton Granger, and conductor is Nicholas Archer.

LoveMusik was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club by special arrangement with Marty Bell, Aldo Scrofani, Boyett Ostar Productions, Tracy Aron, Roger Berlind/Debra Black, Chase Mishkin, and Ted Snowdon.

Producer Bell previously told Playbill.com that there were plans for international productions of the show.
