Added Performance of Wicked to Benefit Actors Fund

By Andrew Gans
30 Nov 2007

An extra performance of Wicked will be presented Dec. 2 at 8 PM to benefit the Actors Fund of America.

Several Broadway shows a year add an extra performance to benefit the non-profit organization that provides support for those in the entertainment industry. Members of the cast and company donate their time for the special performance.

Wicked plays the Gershwin Theatre and currently stars Stephanie J. Block as Elphaba and Annaleigh Ashford as Glinda.

The Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical was one of the many shows shuttered during the lengthy stagehands strike, which ended Nov. 28. Prior to returning to work Nov. 29, Wicked co-star Block told Playbill.com, "I think for me going back to work is going to be quite a blessing. I've missed the Broadway community, I've certainly missed my cast although we have seen each other periodically by checking in at half hour. It's just a different feeling of community when you're onstage and working together to tell a story and entertain those that have come to New York to see Broadway. And I've desperately missed the character of Elphaba. She's a great part of me and going into work and doing this role eight times a week is a blessing and a release and such a gift. So I will certainly be enjoying every second onstage tonight and really appreciating it all."

The Actors Fund, which was founded in 1882, is a non-profit organization that provides for the social welfare of all entertainment professionals. Some of the many programs The Actors Fund provides include a nursing home and assisted living care facility; senior and disabled programs; mental health services; chemical dependency services; entertainment industry assistance programs; the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative; the AIDS Initiative; and supportive housing on both coasts. For more information visit www.actorsfund.org.

Tickets for the added performance, priced $61.25-$251.25, are available by calling (212) 307-4100, (800) 755-4000 or by visiting the Gershwin box office at 222 West 51st Street.
