Bashoff to Replace Gallagher, Jr. in Spring Awakening; Burton Will Also Join Cast

By Adam Hetrick
07 Dec 2007

Blake Bashoff will join the cast of Spring Awakening in the role of Moritz.

"Lost" and "One Tree Hill" star Blake Bashoff will make his Broadway debut later this month as the ill-fated Moritz in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

Production sources confirmed to Playbill.com that Bashoff will assume the role of Moritz in the Steven Sater-Duncan Sheik musical Dec. 18. John Gallagher, Jr., who earned a Tony Award for his work in the role of the angst-ridden teen, will play his final performance Dec. 16.

Also set to join the Spring Awakening company in December is three-time Tony nominee Kate Burton, who will succeed Christine Estabrook in the the Adult Women roles Dec. 21. While Glenn Fleshler will succeed Stephen Spinella in the Adult Men roles Dec. 11.

Jonathan Groff, a Tony nominee for his performance as Melchior in Spring Awakening, and co-star Lea Michele continue to star in the production, which also currently features Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), Blake Daniel (Ernst), Brian Charles Johnson (Otto), Lauren Pritchard (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Jonathan B. Wright (Hanschen), Remy Zaken (Thea) and Stephen Spinella (Adult Men). The ensemble includes Gerard Canonico, Matt Doyle, Jennifer Damiano and Alexandra Socha.

Blake Bashoff's screen credits include "Lost," "One Tree Hill," "Judging Amy," "Numb3rs," and "Without a Trace." On film he has appeared in "Bushwhacked," "Big Bully," HBO's "A Child Betrayed: The Calvin Mire Story" and "The New Swiss Family Robinson." Bashoff will be seen in the upcoming feature "Together Again for the First Time."

In 2002 Kate Burton received dual Tony nominations: Best Actress in a Play for Hedda Gabler and Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Elephant Man. Burton has also appeared on Broadway in The Constant Wife, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, An American Daughter, Company, Jake's Women, Some Americans Abroad, Wild Honey, Doonesbury, Alice in Wonderland and Present Laughter. Her screen credits include "Celebrity," "Ice Storm," "First Wives Club" and "August."

Based on the 1891 expressionist play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

In 2008 Spring Awakening will launch a national tour beginning in San Francisco. International productions are currently in development in London, Japan and Germany. Casting is expected shortly.

Spring Awakening currently plays the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. For tickets call (212) 239-6200 or visit www.telecharge.com.
