Esposito is Brother Gooper in Broadway-Bound Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

By Kenneth Jones
20 Dec 2007

Giancarlo Esposito will play Gooper, Maggie the Cat's money-and-status-hungry brother-in-law, in the new Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize winning play Cat on a Hot Ton Roof in spring 2008.

The actor won two Obie Awards for Zooman and The Sign at the Negro Ensemble Company and Distant Fires at The Atlantic Theatre Company, where he performs and teaches as a company member. His Broadway credits include Sacrilege, Merrily We Roll Along, Seesaw and Lost in the Stars.

Among his film credits are "Do The Right Thing," "Mo Betta Blues" and "Malcolm X."

As previously announced, the new African-American-cast Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is directed by Debbie Allen. Performances begin at the Broadhurst Theatre Feb. 12, 2008, toward a March 6 opening. Tickets for the limited-run engagement are on sale through April 13, 2008.

Esposito joins Terrence Howard, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose and James Earl Jones. Cat is being presented by Front Row Productions and produced by Stephen C. Byrd.

According to the producers, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has been revived on Broadway four times before, [but] this production marks the first African-American production approved by Williams' estate for the Broadway stage. This revival of Cat is not only making Broadway history, it is making American theatre and black theatre history too!"

In the famous play, "Hypocrisy, greed and secret passions threaten to tear apart a wealthy but dysfunctional Mississippi family. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof searingly portrays the larger-than-life characters of Maggie 'the Cat,' her alcoholic husband, Brick, and the dominating family patriarch, Big Daddy."

Tickets go on sale on Dec. 29. For more information, visit www.Cat2008onBroadway.com.
