Cates, Rupert, Loprest and Stanek Set for Afterwards Readings

By Andrew Gans
27 Dec 2007

Michael Rupert

Two by-invitation-only readings of the new musical Afterwards will be presented Jan. 11, 2008, at the Playwrights Horizons Rehearsal Studio on West 42nd Street.

The 11 AM and 4 PM readings will feature the talents of Kristy Cates, Kate Loprest, Michael Rupert and Jim Stanek with Morgan James, Jennifer Lorae and Jasmin Walker. Chris Walker directs with musical direction by Michael Biagi.

Afterwards features music by Novello and Olivier Award winner Denis King and book and lyrics by RT Comedy Award winner Mary Stewart-David. Richard Andrews is producing the reading.

The teaser for the new musical by the British creative team states: "Love, jealousy, rage, hopeless infatuation, betrayal, treachery, abuse of power, adultery and drug addiction: an average day in the life of a British university professor . . ."

In a statement producer Andrews said, "Recent British musicals have had a bad press in New York — and justifiably so — for being concocted from the back catalogues of clapped out pop groups. Afterwards is not like that. It is an entirely original story, about the intertwined lives of four interesting and intriguing characters, over a period of ten years, which doesn't work out as you might expect. The story will touch everyone — as a lyric says, 'I wish I'd thought of afterwards before…' — well who hasn't felt that at some time? It is a real piece of musical theatre: the songs forward the action or illuminate the characters."
