Katrina Chester Returns to Love, Janis for Alley Theatre Run

By Adam Hetrick
28 Dec 2007

Houston's Alley Theatre has announced complete casting and creative team for its January production of Love, Janis.

The tribute to the late blues rocker, which enjoyed a successful run Off-Broadway in 2001, was conceived, adapted and directed by Randal Myler, who will stage the Alley run. The stage production is based on the book "Love, Janis" – culled from the late singer's private letters and compiled by her sister Laura Joplin.

Love, Janis features the title role split between a "Singing Janis" and a "Speaking Janis." For the Alley production, acclaimed Love, Janis veteran Katrina Chester stars as "Singing Janis" – reprising the role in which she starred Off-Broadway and on national tour. Mary Bridget Davies alternates with Chester in the vocally demanding role, while Marisa Ryan portrays the "Speaking Janis" counterpart with Paul Hope as the "Interviewer." The production will also employ a seven-piece band.

"Following her life from 1966 until her death in 1970, Love, Janis features performances of many of her smash hits: 'Piece of My Heart,' 'Me and Bobby McGee,' 'Mercedes Benz' and 'Ball and Chain' resulting in a compelling portrait of an artist who wanted to be remembered for her music and her refusal to compromise," production notes state.

The production will feature scenic design by Norm Schwab, costume design by Lorraine Venberg, lighting design by Don Darnutzer, sound design by Eric Stahlhammer, projections design by Jeffrey Cady, musical direction by Sam Andrew and musical supervision by Eric Massimino.

Love, Janis plays the Alley Theatre Jan. 11-Feb. 10. Tickets are available by visiting www.alleytheatre.org or by calling (713) 220-5700. The Alley Theatre is located at 615 Texas Avenue in Houston, TX.
