Adam Pascal Makes Nickelodeon Debut with "Backyardigans"

By Adam Hetrick
08 Jan 2008

Tony nominee Adam Pascal lends his voice to Nickelodeon's "The Backyardigans" primetime television movie Jan. 14.

The weekly Nickelodeon series, popular with pre-schoolers, is an animated musical adventure series featuring original songs and dancing. Five friends — Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha and Austin — use their imaginations to transform their backyard into different adventures.

Pascal lends his voice as the narrator for the "Backyardigans" special "Tale of the Mighty Knights" – scheduled to air at 7 PM ET. During the hour-long movie, Pascal will also perform the rock ballad "Not an Egg."

"I have two boys who are six and three and they love 'The Backyardigans' the same way I loved shows like 'The Electric Company,' 'Sesame Street' and 'Zoom,'" said Pascal in a statement. "Those shows stay with me to this day. 'The Backyardigans' is a classic on that same level, and it will stay with kids for decades to come. I'm really proud I can be a part of it."

Pascal's vocals will also be featured on the upcoming Jan. 22 release of "The Backyardigans: Born to Play" CD. Released by Nickelodeon and Sony BMG, the album features celebrities such as Alicia Keys performing "Almost Everything is Boinga"; Cyndi Lauper on "Lady in Pink"; and Pascal's "Not an Egg."

Adam Pascal is a Tony nominee for his portrayal of Rodger in the 1996 musical Rent, a role he re-created for the film adaptation. He created the role of Radames for the Disney adaptation of the Verdi opera Aida. Pascal also appeared in the Broadway production of Cabaret and has released the solo recordings "Model Prisoner" and "Civilian."

The Backyardigans airs regularly weekdays at 9 AM and 1 PM ET/PT on Nick Jr. The animated dance steps are choreographed by Beth Bogush, a former director of the Alvin Ailey Dance School's children's program.
