"High School Musical 2" and "Tony Awards" Nominated for DGA TV Awards

By Ernio Hernandez
11 Jan 2008

Kenny Ortega, director of Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2," and Glenn Weiss, who headed CBS's presentation of "The 61st Annual Tony Awards," are among the nominees announced for Directors Guild of America Awards for television.

DGA President Michael Apted announced the nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television, Documentaries and Commercials for the year 2007. Winners will be presented with their awards at the 60th Annual DGA Awards dinner Jan. 26 at Los Angeles's Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. (The winners of the previously announced DGA film nominations will also be revealed.)

Ortega ("Newsies") could repeat his 2006 victory (for the original "High School Musical") in the same category, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Children's Programs Award. His competition includes Paul Hoen (for Disney Channel's "Jump In"), Fred Savage (Disney Channel's "Wizards Of Waverly Place: The Crazy 10 Minute Sale"), Judith Vogelsang (PBS' "Going Green - Every Home An Eco-Home") and Andy Wolk (ABC Family's "Lincoln Heights - That Feeling That We Have").

Weiss, who earned his fifth DGA Award nomination, will vie for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Musical Variety for "The 61st annual Tony Awards" in a field that includes Jerry Foley (for CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" - Show #2773), Louis J. Horvitz (ABC's "The 79th Annual Academy Awards"), Jim Hoskinson ( Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" - #3052) and Chuck O'Neil (Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"). Weiss' previous nominations were for the Tony program in 2006, 2005, 2002 and 2001.
