Pittsburgh Public Launches 2008 With Amadeus Jan. 24

By Kenneth Jones
14 Jan 2008

Tony Abatemarco is Antonio Salieri and Harris Doran is Mozart in the new Pittsburgh Public Theater production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, starting previews Jan. 24.

PPT producing artistic director Ted Pappas stages the fictionalized account of the rivalry between court composer Salieri and upstart genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Doran was last seen at PPT as the Emcee in Cabaret and was also starred in the Actors Fund's benefit concert of Hair. Juilliard graduate Abatemarco is a veteran actor, director and playwright who directed Julie Harris in Lucifer's Child and was artistic director of Jacques d'Amboise's National Dance Institute in Los Angeles.

According to PPT, "Part biography, part murder-mystery, the play pits the envious composer, Salieri, against the young genius, Mozart, in a fight to the finish with 18th century Austria as the dramatic backdrop." Amadeus premiered at the National Theatre in London in 1979 and later opened on Broadway in 1980, earning five Tony Awards including Best Play. The movie version, directed by Milos Forman, won the Academy Award for Best Film in 1985.

Performances play through Feb. 24 at the O'Reilly Theater in Pittsburgh. Opening is Feb. 1.

The cast includes Karen Baum as Katherina Cavalieri; Ken Bolden as Salieri's Valet; Alex Coleman as Baron van Swieten; Larry Daggett & Brett Kennedy as The "Venticelli"; Evan R. Endres as Salieri's Cook; Nick Ferrara as Servant; Daina Michelle Griffith as Constanze Weber; Christopher Josephs as Johann Kilian von Strack; Brian Kazakoff as Servant; Daniel Krell as Joseph II; Richard Lorenzo McBride as Servant; Larry John Myers as Count Orsini-Rosenberg; Kendra McLaughlin as Teresa Salieri; Joel Ripka as Major-Domo; Andrew David Swackhamer as Servant; and Mark Conway Thompson as Guissepe Bonno.

The creative team includes James Noone (scenic designer), Susan Tsu (costume designer), Kirk Bookman (lighting designer) and Zach Moore (sound designer). Ruth E. Kramer is production stage manager; Fredric H. Orner is assistant stage manager.
