"A Raisin in the Sun," "Hamlet 2" and More Play Sundance Film Fest Beginning Jan. 17

By Ernio Hernandez
17 Jan 2008

ABC's television adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun — featuring Audra McDonald, Sean Combs, Sanaa Lathan and Phylicia Rashad — makes its world premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Craig Lucas, Martin McDonagh, Alan Ball, Stanley Tucci, William H. Macy and more are among the stage artists featured in the 2008 Sundance festival, which launches Jan. 17 for a run through Jan. 27 in and around Park City, Utah.

Kenny Leon, who staged the Broadway revival of Raisin, directs the ABC-TV movie, which features the aforementioned stars as well as Bill Nunn, Cephas Jones, Sean Patrick Thomas and John Stamos. Justin Martin and David Oyelowo round out the ensemble. (The made-for-TV film will air on ABC Feb. 25).

Also featured at the festival will be "Hamlet 2." Andrew Fleming directs his and Pam Brady's script for the film, which stars Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Elizabeth Shue, Amy Poehler, David Arquette and Melonie Diaz. The comedy finds "a high school drama teacher [who] injects love and passion for theatre into his students by creating a musical sequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet."

Other works of interest to theatre fans: Craig Lucas' "Birds of America," Martin McDonagh's "In Bruges" (which he also penned), Stanley Tucci's "Blind Date," Terry Kinney's "Diminished Capacity" (starring stage stars Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda and Dylan Baker) and Alan Ball's "Towelhead." William H. Macy co-wrote the screenplay for "The Deal" (with director Steven Schachter).
