"Sweeney Todd" Soundtrack Climbs Higher on "The Billboard 200" Chart

By Ernio Hernandez
17 Jan 2008

The Nonesuch Records release of the soundtrack to Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" film climbed again this week on "The Billboard 200" chart.

Released on Dec. 18, the album debuted on the chart at No. 56 and jumped to No. 23, then No. 18 in succeeding weeks. For its fourth week, it has climbed to its highest spot thus far: No. 16.

"Sweeney Todd" also holds steady on the "Top Soundtracks" chart at No. 4. The recording, however, did slide on the "Top Digital Albums" chart (to No. 11) and on the "Top Internet Albums" chart (to No. 8).

Nonesuch also saw a steady flow in sales for the recent new Broadway cast recording of Sweeney Todd (the revival's album placed at No. 14 on "Top Cast Albums"). The new Tim Burton film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical also spurred the original Sweeney Todd cast recording (on RCA Red Seal) to place onto that chart (at No. 8).

Nonesuch issued a deluxe edition and a highlights version of the "Sweeney Todd" film soundtrack, both produced by Mike Higham. The albums were recorded in London.

Longtime Sondheim collaborators, orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and music supervisor Paul Gemignani, worked on the soundtrack.

Featuring the pared-down score from the film, the soundtrack includes Johnny Depp in the title role with Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Rounding out the cast are Laura Michelle Kelly (Fiddler on the Roof) as the Beggar Woman, Jamie Campbell Bowen as Anthony, Jayne Wisener as Johanna and newcomer Edward Sanders as Tobias.

The tracks featured on the deluxe edition follow:

1. "Opening Title"
2. "No Place Like London"
3. "The Worst Pies in London"
4. "Poor Thing"
5. "My Friends"
6. "Green Finch & Linnett Bird"
7. "Alms Alms"
8. "Johanna"
9. "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir"
10. "The Contest"
11. "Wait"
12. "Ladies and Their Sensitivities"
13. "Pretty Women"
14. "Epiphany"
15. "A Little Priest"
16. "Johanna"
17. "God, That s Good!"
18. "By the Sea"
19. "Not While I'm Around"
20. "Final Scene"

The highlights disc excludes the "Opening Title," "Alms Alms," "Ladies and Their Sensitivities" and the "Final Scene" as well as the bonus content (including an 80 page, full-color booklet).

Nonesuch also released the cast recording for the recent revival of Sweeney Todd, featuring Tony winners Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone.

Fans can currently preview songs from the film by visiting the official website at sweeneytoddmovie.com.

The DreamWorks/Warner Bros. film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical is penned by John Logan ("The Aviator," "Gladiator"). Tim Burton directed the film that debuted in theatres across the country Dec. 21. The film opened in the top five at the box office.
