Casting Complete for Yasmina Reza's Carnage

By John Nathan
22 Jan 2008

The starry cast of Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage has been officially confirmed.

As previously reported, Ralph Fiennes will be joined by Tamsin Greig, Ken Stott and Janet McTeer in the English-language world premier at London's Gielgud Theatre.

God of Carnage officially opens March 25 following previews that begin March 7. The run will precede Fiennes' appearance at the National Theatre in a production of Oedipus, directed by Jonathan Kent later in this year.

Like Reza's Art, The God of Carnage will be directed by Matthew Warchus with a translation by Christopher Hampton. Producers include David Pugh and Daffyd Rogers.

Carnage, according to press notes, "tells of what happens when two sets of parents meet up to deal with the unruly behaviour of their children. A calm and rational debate between grown-ups about the need to teach kids how to behave properly? Or a hysterical night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime? Boys will be boys... but the adults are usually worse... much worse..."

Producer Rogers describes God of Carnage as a comedy about parenting skills. The plot centers on two middle-class couples each of whom have a nine-year-old son. Fiennes and Greig play the middle-class parents of a boy who attacks the son of another couple, played by Stott and McTeer (the title role of Mary Stuart and The Duchess of Malfi). All four parents get together to discuss what happened.

Stott was in the original cast of Reza's hugely successful play Art, with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. Stott's previous West End performance was with Richard Griffiths and John Hurt in Heroes, by another French writer Gerald Sibleyras.

Greig is best known for her appearance in the television comedy "Green Wing." The actress won an Olivier Award for her Beatrice in the RSC's production of Much Ado About Nothing.

Reza's other credits include Life X 3 and Conversations After a Burial.
