High School Musical, a U.K. Hit on Tour, Will Get Separate London Sitdown

By Ernio Hernandez
28 Jan 2008

Already a sell-out hit on its U.K. national tour, High School Musical will also be presented in London at the Hammersmith Apollo Theatre starting June 30.

Disney Theatrical Group announced the new production Jan. 28. The limited "six weeks only" run will perform "with an entirely new cast and a production designed specifically for the venue," according to a release. Tickets are currently on sale through Ticketmaster and highschoolmusicalonstage.co.uk.

"We are overwhelmed by the success of High School Musical in all its live incarnations," stated Disney Theatrical Group president Thomas Schumacher. "This show has been responsible for introducing millions of children to the joys of theatre and live performance. Whether they are participating in a school production or going to a professional theatre for the very first time, High School Musical has been the gateway into an entirely new world."

In addition to the London sitdown and national tour productions, High School Musical is also on tour in the United States and "The Ice Tour" version continues in the U.S. and U.K. (having already played in Italy, Spain and Mexico). The show has two major international tours launching in March in Italy (March 16) and Spain (March 20) as well as a Dutch production (November 2008) and "additional licensed productions are planned in Denmark, Mexico, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines."

Stage Entertainment's current U.K. tour which launched Jan. 24 in Bromley will play a 31-date run with a current "advance of over 9 million pounds Sterling (approximately 18 million US dollars)." Many tour dates have already sold out or are nearly booked to capacity, according to a release.

Both U.K. incarnations of High School Musical can be found on the web at highschoolmusicalonstage.co.uk.
