By Kenneth Jones
29 Jan 2008

Stephen Mo Hanan, the Tony Award-nominated character actor from Cats, will star in Florida Repertory Theatre's new production of the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Feb. 15-March 16.

Producing artistic director Robert Cacioppo directs Forum, to play the Historic Arcade Theatre in the Fort Myers River District in Fort Myers.

Also featured in the cast will be Douglas Ullman, Jr. as Hero, who comes to Florida Rep after a run in The Fantasticks Off-Broadway at the Jerry Orbach Theatre. Ullman was the original Mute in the 2006 revival directed by Tom Jones, and later took over the role of Matt.

The musical farce that gave the world the song "Comedy Tonight," Forum has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. Hanan will play the Roman slave Pseudolus.

Forum's troupers include Jason Parrish, Mark Chambers, Aaron Lake, Michelle Damato, Margot Moreland, Bob Del Pazzo, Brian Bailey, Taela Naomi, Christina Lynn Phillips, Jessica Vacarro, Lissen Ellington, Amy Marie McCleary, Alesia Lawson, Rachel Lomax and John Warren.

In addition to his 1983 Tony-nominated performance in Cats (he played Asparagus), Hanan appeared on Broadway as Captain Hook opposite Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan, as Fagin in Oliver! with Patti LuPone, in The Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline and the London cast of Les Miz as Thenardier. He also wrote and acted in the Off-Broadway musical Jolson & Co.

The Forum design team includes Richard Crowell (set designer), Graham Kindred (lighting designer) and Roberta Malcolm (overseeing the 1996 Broadway revival costumes).

Terry Hanson is music director. Artie D'Alessio is choreographer.

Forum will play Tuesday-Saturday at 8 PM, with 2 PM matinees on Wednesday, Sunday and selected Saturdays with a Twilight Performance at 7 PM on Feb. 17.

This is the 10th anniversary of Florida Repertory Theatre.
