Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, With 47-Piece Orchestra, to Play Town Hall

By Adam Hetrick
19 Feb 2008

Tom Stoppard's Every Good Boy Deserves Favour will receive a rare New York staging at Town Hall in Manhattan March 14.

Good Boy is a rarity for production, as the work requires a full orchestra in addition to its company of actors. Featuring a score composed by Academy and Grammy Award winner André Previn and text by playwright Tom Stoppard, the 1977 drama takes place in a Soviet mental asylum.

Inspired by a meeting between Previn and Russian exile Viktor Fainberg, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour focuses on two patients – a political prisoner Alexander Ivanov and a schizophrenic simply named Ivanov (who believes he is conducting a full symphony orchestra on stage) – who share a small cell.

The title not only refers to the mnemonic used for the musical notes designated on the treble clef, but also for the ramifications of Alexander Ivanov, whose son's future is at risk during his father's incarceration.

Presented as part of Boston University's InCite Arts Festival, Good Boy, featuring a 47-piece symphony orchestra, will play Town Hall at 8 PM.

Jason McDowell-Green and Alex Mickiewicz star in the production that was previously presented in 2006 as part of Boston University's College of Fine Arts Fringe Festival. The production is directed by Jim Petosa and will be conducted by Neal Hampton.

Also set for Boston University's InCite Arts Festival will be Nitzan Halperin's new play, Sow and Weep, and Michael Nyman's one-act opera, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Programming for the Boston University InCite Festival will also feature a chamber orchestra concert, an exhibition of works by MFA painting and sculpture students and a showcase of senior actors from the BU School of Theatre.

Tickets for Every Good Boy Deserves Favour are available by phoning (212) 307-4100 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com. For additional information on BU's InCite Arts Festival, visit www.bu.edu/cfa/incite.
