"No Country for Old Men" Wins Best Picture Oscar; Day-Lewis, Cotillard, Coens and "Sweeney" Also Winners

Marion Cotillard won the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance as the famed French chanteuse Edith Piaf in the film "La Vie en Rose," while Daniel Day-Lewis won the Best Actor Oscar for his powerful performance in "There Will Be Blood."
Emmy Award winner Jon Stewart hosted the 80th Academy Awards ceremony, which was broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center.
"No Country for Old Men" was the big winner of the evening, nabbing the top prize for Best Picture. The film by Joel Cohen and Ethan Cohen — the latter's trio of plays, Almost an Evening, recently played the Atlantic Theater Company and will move to a commercial Off-Broadway run — won several additional Oscars, including two for the Coen brothers: for Best Director and for Best Adapted Screenplay. Javier Bardem also won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in "No Country."
Although Tim Burton's acclaimed version of "Sweeney Todd" won the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy, the film of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical failed to pick up an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. It did, however, win an Oscar for Best Art Direction.
Despite three nominations in the Original Song category (all for songs from the film "Enchanted"), theatre and film composers (and previous Oscar winners) Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz lost the Academy Award to Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova for their song "Falling Slowly" from the film "Once."
