Xanadu's Hoffman to Host Purim Shpiel; Kind, Tartaglia, Golden, Burnham and More to Perform

By Andrew Gans
04 Mar 2008

The 4th Annual Broadway Purim Shpiel to benefit Birthright Israel will be presented March 17 at the Hudson Theatre in Manhattan.

Xanadu star Jackie Hoffman will host the event, which, press notes state, is a "hilarious retelling of the Purim story." The evening of song and comedy will also feature the talents of Richard Kind, Skylar Astin, John Tartaglia, Kenita Miller, Iris Bahr, Heather Spore, Annie Golden, David Burnham, Sarah Saltzberg, David Rossmer, Steve Rosen and Dan Lipton.

Purim is the Jewish holiday commemorated by dressing up in masks and costumes and reading the Megillah, also known as the Book of Esther. In the story, Queen Esther helps her fellow Jews in Persia escape from being killed by Haman.

In a statement National Entertainment Fund for the Cultural Arts' founder and executive director Scott Kluge said, "This will be the funniest show we have ever produced. We cast some of the funniest performers in New York, starting with this year's new host, Jackie Hoffman and TV star Richard Kind. Every word out of these actor's mouths will have our audience on the floor in laughter. We also have stars from the smash hit Spring Awakening. Collectively, this could be the most exciting cast we have ever had. I know our fans, who come from all over the country to see the Shpiel, will be talking about this show for months."

The evening will begin at 7 PM with complimentary cocktails and light food followed by the 8 PM performance. A wine and dessert reception will follow.

Proceeds will benefit Taglit-Birthright Israel, an organization dedicated to "sending young Jews from across the world to Israel."

The Hudson Theatre is located in Manhattan at 141 West 44th Street. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.4thbroadwaypurimshpiel.com.
