By Mark Shenton
18 Mar 2008

Jo Stone-Fewings, recently seen in the West End in The Country Wife at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, will take over the role of Richard Hannay in The 39 Steps at the Criterion.

The actor will join Josefina Gabrielle, Martyn Ellis and Simon Gregor in the show beginning April 28.

Stone-Fewings' other theatre credits include Nikolai Rostov in War and Peace, Barrildo in Fuente Ovejuna and Alex in Ghetto all for the National Theatre; Lucentio in The Taming of the Shrew, Orsino in Twelfth Night, Richmond/Gray in Richard III and Clarence in the tour of Henry VI, Part III, all for the Royal Shakespeare Company; Edgar in King Lear and Dinnesdale in The Scarlett Letter for the Chichester Festival Theatre; and Clive in the West End transfer of See How They Ru. His television credits include "Talk To Me," "Doctor Who," "All the Kings Men," "Waiting for God" all for the BBC as well as "Mine All Mine," "Young Arthur" and "Peak Practice." On film his work includes "American Friends," "Wondrous Oblivion" and "Nine Lives."

The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the 1935 classic Hitchcock movie thriller and directed by Maria Aitken, has been running at the Criterion Theatre in the West End since September 2006, after transferring from the Tricycle Theatre. To date, the production has grossed over £5 million. It is also currently running at Broadway's American Airlines Theatre under the auspices of the Roundabout Theatre Company, and will transfer to the Cort Theatre April 29 for an extended run. There have also been productions in Israel, Italy and South Africa; in April, the Melbourne Theatre Company production opens in Australia with another production due to open in Korea in September.
