Lloyd Webber Will Lord Over "American Idol" Contestants; Top Ten Finalists Announced

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber will be one of the mentors during the current season of FOX's "American Idol" competition.
"Idol" host Ryan Seacrest announced March 19 that the Tony and Olivier Award-winning composer will be one of four mentors who will guide the "American Idol" finalists through one week of the singing competition. Lloyd Webber will likely coach the finalists on selections from his songbook.
The other mentors announced include Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey and Neil Diamond.
The March 19 "American Idol" broadcast also revealed the top ten finalists of America's largest singing competition. The ten singers who have secured places in the summer "Idol" tour include David Archuleta, Jason Castro, Chikezie, David Cook, Kristy Lee Cook, Michael Johns, Ramiele Malubay, Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson and Brooke White.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is the award-winning composer of The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, By Jeeves, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Starlight Express, Whistle Down the Wind, The Woman in White, The Beautiful Game and Song & Dance. Among his producing credits are Bombay Dreams and the current West End revival of The Sound of Music. Lloyd Webber also took part in the TV reality casting shows for The Sound of Music and the current London revival of Joseph. He also owns seven London theatres, including the Palace, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the London Palladium.
The composer is currently penning a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera.
"American Idol" airs Tuesday nights at 8 PM ET on FOX TV. The results show airs the following evening at 9 PM.
