Buscemi, Wainwright and More Will Sing Disney Tunes in Stay Awake Live at St. Ann's

By Adam Hetrick
20 Mar 2008

St. Ann's Warehouse will stage a 20th anniversary gala concert of Hal Willner's album of Disney covers, "Stay Awake," on April 2.

The gala fundraiser, entitled Stay Awake Live, features popular artists reinterpreting tunes from the Disney songbook. For the original 1988 album, Willner enlisted such contemporary talents as Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Tom Waits, Sinead O'Connor, Harry Nilsson and Sun Ra & His Arkestra.

The St. Ann's benefit concert reunites album originals Terry Adams of NRBQ, Marshall Allen of Sun Ra Arkestra, Maud and Garth Hudson, Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega, and the voice of Ken Nordine.

Newcomers to the event include actor Steve Buscemi as well as musicians Beth Orton, Martha Wainwright, David Byrne, Gavin Friday and Richard Strange.

The live concert of the 1988 album, never-before staged in America, debuted last summer at London's Meltdwon Festival.

Songs from the "Stay Awake" album include "Baby Mine," "Hi Diddle Dee Dee," "Feed the Birds," "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," "Second Star to the Right," "Heigh Ho," "When You Wish Upon a Star," "Mickey Mouse March," "Castle In Spain," "Someday My Prince Will Come," and the title song.

The evening will begin with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 PM, followed by the 8 PM premiere concert of Stay Awake Live with dinner and dessert to follow at 9:15 PM.

Tickets are available by calling (718) 254-8779 or online at artsatstanns.org.

St. Ann's Warehouse is located at 38 Water Street (between Main and Dock St.) in Brooklyn, New York.
