Mermaid's Scott Sings from Eclectic Songbook in Benefit You May Now Worship Me

By Andrew Gans
31 Mar 2008

Sherie Rene Scott

In lieu of the annual Nothin' Like a Dame concert to benefit the Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative of The Actors Fund, only one "dame" will be standing centerstage March 31 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre: Sherie Rene Scott.

Scott, who is currently playing Ursula in the new Disney musical The Little Mermaid, offers a one-night-only performance of a collection of musical short stories. Entitled You May Now Worship Me, the evening — which, by last Friday, was nearly sold out — was conceived and written by Scott and Tony nominee Dick Scanlan.

Tony Award winner Michael Mayer directs the 8 PM performance, which features musical direction by Tom Kitt.

You May Now Worship Me is billed as "Scott's collection of deeply personal stories. From her childhood in Topeka to her eventual rise to Broadway semi-star, this is her truth, her whole truth, and nothing but her truth… only better. Featuring songs made famous by such icons as Judy Garland, Rickie Lee Jones, Tom Waits, and Mr. Rogers, You May Worship Me Now reminds us that none of us are in Kansas anymore."

About Worship, Scott recently told Playbill.com, "I should say that the songs are kind of secondary to the writing of the piece. Every song that's chosen really has to do with [the storytelling]. I have to say it's not like, 'I like this song, therefore I want to sing it.' It's really about the songs that help move the story along and help tell the story. We open with a Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings song. There's U2, there are Judy Garland songs, there's Harry Nilsson, there's George Harrison, David Burns, a cross-section of things, maybe some familiar favorites."

Sherie Rene Scott has been seen on Broadway in The Who's Tommy, Grease, Rent, Aida and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, earning a Tony nomination for her work in the latter. Her other theatrical credits include The Last Five Years, Debbie Does Dallas, Elaborate Lives, Faust and Over and Over. Scott won a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress for her work in Landscape of the Body.

This benefit for The Phyllis Newman Women's Heath Initiative of The Actors Fund is presented by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Scattered tickets may be available by calling (212) 840-0770, ext. 268 or by visiting www.BroadwayCares.org. (A spokesman told Playbill.com Friday that there may be a few tickets available at the door at the last minute, but don't count on it.)

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is located in Manhattan at 230 West 49th Street.
