Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Opens in Mexico City March 26

By Adam Hetrick
26 Mar 2008

David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opens March 26 in its first Spanish-language production, in Mexico City.

Entitled Una Eva y Dos Patanes, the production began previews at the Teatro de los Insurgentes March 14. Co-produced by Claudio Carrera through Retro Lab Productions (also responsible for the Mexican stagings of Cabaret, Victor/Victoria, The Graduate and Festen), the musical is directed by Eugenio Derbez.

The musical comedy has a book by Lane and music and lyrics by Yazbek. Una Eva y Does Patanes is co-produced by Federico González Compeán (OCESA Teatro) and Tina Galindo.

The cast for Una Eva y Dos Patanes includes Mexican comedian and star of Broadway's Latinologues Eugenio Derbez as ambitious con man Freddy, alongside Eugenio Montessoro (Chicago, The Graduate, Victor/Victoria) as Lawrence, Jacqueline Voltaire (Pippin) as Muriel, Dario Ripoll (Chicago) as André, Shaula Vega as Jolene and pop singer Alessandra Rosaldo as Christine.

Based on the 1988 film "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" the musical focuses on two con men living in the French Riviera, who become involved in a series of schemes to swindle wealthy women out of their riches.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2005, including Best Musical. The Broadway production starred John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Rene Scott, Greg Jbara, Sara Gettelfinger and Joanna Gleason. Jack O'Brien directed the Broadway production with choreography by Jerry Mitchell.

Upcoming projects from producer Carrera include a revival of The Sound of Music slated for Mexico and Buenos Aires, as well as a planned 2009 Mexico City premiere of Nine starring Jaime Camil as Guido.
