Vroman, Graae and Stout Join Music Man Concerts with Jones and Cassidy

By Adam Hetrick
and Andrew Gans
27 Mar 2008

Jason Graae

Broadway's Mary Stout, Lisa Vroman and Jason Graae will join Shirley Jones and Patrick Cassidy for The Music Man in concert at Hartford's Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts April 22-27.

As previously reported, Jones, who played Marian the Librarian in the film version of Meredith Willson's The Music Man, will star (as Marian's mother) in the concerts that also feature her son, Patrick Cassidy, as con man Harold Hill.

Newly added to the cast are Lisa Vroman (Phantom of the Opera) as Marian Paroo, Jason Graae (A Grand Night for Singing) as Marcellus Washburn, Mary Stout (Jane Eyre) as Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, David Coffee (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) as Mayor Shinn, Tim Hausmann as Tommy Djilas and Bradley Benjamin (Oklahoma!) as Zanetta Shinn.

The Music Man cast is completed by Shell Bauman, Thomas Scott Beebe, Adam Cates, Christopher Campochiaro, Kym Chambers, Ben Franklin, Eric Sean Fogel, Bob Freschi, Tracy Funke, Grace Gentile, Katie Warner Johnson, Alisha Kapur, Mary Jo McConnell, Abigail McMillan, Hallie Metcalf, Candy Olsen, Joseph Dellger, Kilty Reidy, Ric Ryder, Andrew Shipman, Laura Spineti, Florence Sturgeon, Joseph Torello and Yvette Tucker.

The concerts, staged by The Boy from Oz's Philip William McKinley, will also feature local students from the Hartt School and area high school marching bands.

The creative team includes musical direction by Edward Cumming, choreography by Peggy Hickey, set design by Ray Klausen and lighting by Kirk Bookman. The production is backed by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

The Music Man, according to press notes, "follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize - despite the fact he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef! His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian. . . who transforms him into a respectable citizen."

The Music Man opened on Broadway in 1957 starring Robert Preston and Barbara Cook. Both actors won Tony Awards for their work (the broadly appealing audience favorite also nabbed the Tony for Best Musical, beating the groundbreaking musical West Side Story) and Preston repeated his role in the 1962 film opposite Shirley Jones. The classic score includes such tunes as "My White Knight," "Goodnight My Someone," "Lida Rose," "Till There Was You," "Seventy-Six Trombones," "Gary, Indiana," "Marian the Librarian," "The Wells Fargo Wagon," "Trouble" and "The Sadder But Wiser Girl."

Tickets, priced $22-$63, are currently on sale by phoning (860) 987-5900, or by visiting www.bushnell.org.
