Brigadoon's "Mist of May" Will Materialize in Boston This Fall, Prior to Broadway

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | Ostar Productions and Liza Lerner confirmed April 7 what had previously leaked out in casting notices — the richly melodic and romantic Brigadoon, by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, is on its way back to Broadway.
A spring 2009 Broadway arrival will follow a fall 2008 tryout in Boston.
Rob Ashford (Curtains, The Wedding Singer, Cry-Baby, Thoroughly Modern Millie, London's recent Parade) will direct and choreograph a revised version of the 1947 musical about two American pals who stumble upon a magical Scottish village. Tony Award winner John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation) will revise Lerner's book. Lyrics are by Lerner and music by Loewe (the men behind the later My Fair Lady and Camelot).
Boston dates and a theatre will be announced in coming weeks.
According to the producers, "One of Broadway's most fabled musicals, Brigadoon is the story of two disillusioned Americans on vacation in Scotland who wander into a village that comes alive every 100 years for only one day."
Ashford won his Tony for choreographing Millie. Liza Lerner is Alan Jay Lerner's daughter.
The beloved score includes such classic songs as "Almost Like Being In Love," "Waiting for My Dearie," "Come to Me, Bend to Me," "There But For You Go I" and "The Heather on the Hill."
The creative team features Christopher Oram (sets and costumes), Paule Constable (lighting) and Brian Ronan (sound). The music department will be led by David Chase.

Agnes De Mille won a Tony Award for her choreography of the original Broadway production, which was staged by Robert Lewis. Pageantry, a sword dance, jigs and reels, a wedding, a funeral — and "the mist of May" — are all part of the romantic fantasy about retreating from the modern world.
The plot was inspired by a 19th-century story by Friedrich Gerstäcker. It involved a German village under a spell. In the musical, American Tommy falls for Fiona, whose sister Jean is marrying Charlie. Brooding local, Harry, is in love with Jean, and threatens to ruin the town's magical spell, which protects it from the outside world.
The M-G-M movie version starred Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse.
