Beaty's Resurrection Added to Hartford Stage Season

By Adam Hetrick
09 Apr 2008

Obie Award winner Daniel Beaty's Resurrection has been added to the line-up of main stage offerings at Hartford Stage for the 2008-2009 season.

A co-production with Arena Stage, Resurrection will first bow at the Washington, D.C. arts center prior to making its Hartford debut in mid-October.

Beaty, who is Hartford's Aetna American Voices Playwright in Residence this season, has created an original work that blends music, poetry, dance, comedy and drama to tell the story of six interconnected black men, who experience a life-changing phenomenon on the same night.

Oz Scott, who helmed the Broadway production of for colored girls…, stages the Arena and Hartford co-production that will feature music by Daniel Bernard Roumain.

Beaty earned a 2007 Obie for his Off-Broadway work Emergence-SEE! at the Public Theater, which was also included as part of Hartford Stage's Brand:NEW festival. Resurrection was also nurtured at Hartford Stage with readings staged by Scott last January.

Hartford's main stage season will commence with the previously announced Midsummer Night's Dream. Lisa Peterson (Public LAB's Poor Itch) will stage the romantic comedy that follows four would-be lovers into an Athenian forest who soon find themselves caught up in the magical world of the Fairy Kingdom.

Hartford Stage will also present a stage version of To Kill a Mockingbird. Tony nominee Kevin Anderson will join Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis in the Hartford Stage production of Tennessee Williams' The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore, May 15-June 15.

Complete casting and dates for the upcoming Hartford Stage season will be announced shortly.

SummerStage offerings include Elaine Stritch: At Liberty, June 24-29; Ella, starring Tina Fabrique as the late Fitzgerald, July 8-27; and actress and writer Carrie Fisher in her latest solo work, Wishful Drinking, Aug. 6-17.

Hartford Stage is located at 50 Church Street in downtown Hartford, CT. Tickets for current shows are available by calling (860) 527-5151. For more information visit www.hartfordstage.org.
