Melcher to Publish Spring Awakening Behind-the-Scenes Book

By Adam Hetrick
17 Apr 2008

Fans of Spring Awakening will get the chance to learn how the Tony-winning hit musical came to life when Melcher Media publishes a comprehensive book on the production.

Steven Sater, the Tony Award-winning book writer and lyricist of Spring Awakening, told Playbill.com that he is currently proofing the hardcover book that will be released to coincide with the launch of Spring Awakening's national tour in September.

Melcher Media, which has also published books about the musicals Avenue Q, The Color Purple, Rent and Wicked, is at work compiling various special features for Spring Awakening's hardcover debut.

Among the items included will be the complete libretto of the musical as well as Spring Awakening's back-story and development, numerous production photos and interviews with the cast and the creative team.

Sater adds that the book will feature initial notes on the production and early lyric drafts, including a 1999 fax of lyrics for "Mirror Blue Night" that Sater sent to Sheik to be set to music.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Steven Sater and a score by Duncan Sheik.

Prior to officially hitting the road, Spring Awakening will rock San Diego's Balboa Theatre Aug. 15-31. Following the pre-tour engagement, the Tony-winning musical officially kicks off its national tour at San Francisco's Curran Theatre Sept. 4-Oct. 12.

National tour engagements also include Seattle, WA (Oct. 14-19, at the Paramount); Portland, OR (Oct. 21-26, at the Keller Auditorium); Tempe, AZ (Dec. 9-14, at the Gammage Auditorium); Tampa, FL (Dec. 29, 2008-Jan. 4, 2009, at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center); Houston, TX (Jan. 6-18, 2009, at the Hobby Center); Toronto (April-May 2009, at the Canon Theatre); Louisville, KY (June 2-7, 2009, at Whitney Hall); Baltimore, MD (June 9-21, 2009, at the Hippodrome Theatre); with additional dates planned for Washington, D.C. (Kennedy Center); and East Lansing, MI. Additional dates and venues are expected to be announced shortly.

The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway the following November, where it continues to play at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

The Broadway production of Spring Awakening currently stars Tony nominee Jonathan Groff (Melchior), Lea Michele (Wendla), Blake Bashoff (Moritz), Skylar Astin (Georg), Lilli Cooper (Martha), Blake Daniel (Ernst), Brian Charles Johnson (Otto), Emma Hunton (Ilse), Phoebe Strole (Anna), Jonathan B. Wright (Hanschen), Remy Zaken (Thea), Kristine Nielsen (Adult Women) and Glenn Fleshler (Adult Men). The ensemble includes Gerard Canonico, Matt Doyle, Eryn Murman and Alexandra Socha.
