Cindy Williams Dons a Habit in Meadow Brook Nunsense in MI

The Theatre Ensemble at Meadow Brook Theatre in metro Detroit is getting a spring shot in the arm April 23-May 18 with a starry production of Nunsense, directed by its creator, Michiganian Dan Goggin.

Cindy Williams, late of Broadway's The Drowsy Chaperone and TV's "Laverne & Shirley," plays Rev. Mother Mary Regina in the daffy musical comedy about Hoboken, NJ, nuns putting on a benefit.

Opening in Rochester, MI, is April 26. This production is a departure for Meadow Brook, which doesn't have a long tradition of star casting or directors re-creating their commercial hits there.

But Goggin's popular broad-strokes musical may be getting a whole new crowd into the resident not-for-profit Meadow Brook, which is operating in a state where the economy is bleak. Gone are the days when Meadow Brook had a five-figure subscribership.

Goggin, a native of Alma, MI, is the creator of all seven Nunsense shows, and previously directed Meshuggah-nuns! and Nunsensations! The Nunsense Las Vegas Revue at Meadow Brook. Following the current Nunsense run, he'll stage Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree as a special engagement, starring Lee Meriwether (May 28-June 8).

The Nunsense cast also includes Bambi Jones (Sister Mary Hubert), who has appeared on the Meadow Brook stage in the two previous Nunsense runs. Making their Meadow Brook debuts are Mary Robin Roth (Sister Robert Anne), Stephanie Wahl (Sister Mary Leo) and Alexandra Kaprielian (Sister Mary Amnesia).

The musical director and conductor is Leo Carusone. Teri Gibson choreographed the show.

The design team includes Barry Axtell (set design), Reid G. Johnson (lighting design) and Mike Duncan (sound design). Stage manager is Tim Jacobs.

Tickets are $22-$38 and are available by calling the box office at (248) 377-3300 or through TicketMaster at www.ticketmaster.com. Groups should call (248) 370-3316.
