Seasons of Love: Big Give, a Rent Cocktail Party, Will Benefit Ubuntu Education Fund

By Andrew Gans
02 May 2008

Current and former cast members of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent will join forces May 14 to help raise money for South Africa's Ubuntu Education Fund.

The cocktail party, which will boast numerous Rent actors, will be held at The Canal Room in Manhattan and will feature a live afrobeat band.

The evening will honor Rent's late composer-lyricist Jonathan Larson. The partnership between the Broadway Rent company and the Ubuntu Education Fund will help continue Larson's mission to "celebrate life amongst poverty, HIV and AIDS, by fundraising for the children of Port Elizabeth, South Africa," according to press notes.

The goal of the evening is to raise $500,000 to build a multi-purpose hall and theatre that will be part of The Ubuntu Centre, a community center and education and health complex.

The Rent cast was inspired to support the Ubuntu Education Fund following a recent trip to South Africa by original Renter Anthony Rapp and current cast member Philip McAdoo. The two actors conducted a Rent workshop in Johannesburg for Ubuntu youth.

Tickets are only available through an on-line auction by clicking here.

Founded in 1999, Ubuntu Education Fund serves "24,000 impoverished and vulnerable children and 15,000 families with life-saving HIV services and essential educational resources. Ubuntu Education Fund is based on the African philosophy of 'ubuntu,' a spirit of common humanity, mutual responsibility and interdependence."
