By Andrew Gans
05 May 2008

Tony Award winner Betty Buckley.

Tony Award winner Betty Buckley, who will be seen this summer in the new M. Night Shyamalan movie "The Happening," has also filmed a role in the HBO miniseries "The Pacific."

Broadway favorite Buckley told Star-Telegram.com, "I am filming an HBO mini-series called 'The Pacific' executive produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. I have a good little cameo in the tenth and final episode. I play the mother of one of the soldiers returning from WW2."

Carl Franklin and Timothy Van Patten direct "The Pacific," which, according to imdb.com, concerns the "intertwined stories of three Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II." The cast includes William Sadler, Joseph Mazzello, Jacob Pitts, Ashton Holmes, Jon Seda, Matt Craven, Brendan Fletcher, Rami Malek, Nathan Corddry, James Badge Dale, Isabel Lucas, Martin McCann, Joshua Close, Jon Bernthal, Damon Herriman, Gary Sweet, Zoe Carides, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Keith Nobbs and Mathew Waters, among others.

Betty Buckley offered acclaimed performances in Sunset Boulevard, Carrie, Song & Dance, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, 1776 and Promises, Promises. She won a Tony Award for her performance as Grizabella in the Broadway production of Cats, and she starred on the London stage in Promises, Promises and Sunset Boulevard, earning an Olivier Award nomination for her work in the latter. Also a TV ("Eight Is Enough") and film ("Tender Mercies") star, the actress-singer devotes much of her time to concert appearances around the world. Her solo CD, "Stars and the Moon: Betty Buckley Live at the Donmar Warehouse," was nominated for a Grammy Award and is available on the Concord Records label. The actress was also seen on the final three seasons of the acclaimed HBO series "Oz" as well as in the Lincoln Center revue, Elegies: A Song Cycle.

Buckley's newest recordings, "Quintessence" and "Betty Buckley 1967," are both available on the Playbill Records/Sony BMG Masterworks Broadway label.
